Such devices typically deposit crop within a band of a width up to about five feet to accommodate the planting to be accomplished by the planter. Such devices cannot be driven in narrow rows, and, when used with narrow row crops, such as potatoes or the like, the furrow paths are not straight, but are curved, with the spacing between them varying. Devices have been developed for forming furrow paths in rows, such as by using a plurality of crop engaging elements. In particular, such elements have been provided in pairs, one being pivoted to open and the other to close to form a furrow path, and these devices have been towed behind a tractor. These devices have typically been single row devices, with the furrow path forming elements being moved a short distance between rows. Examples of such devices are disclosed in U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,023,251 and 4,327,272. Although such devices have proven to be successful, they have had disadvantages in terms of production speed and inability to lay out a furrow path along a curved path. There is a need for an improved device for making contour cuts in rows of crop. An implement is towed behind a tractor and includes a plurality of parallel furrow paths arranged in side-by-side relation and spaced a distance apart. In one embodiment, the furrow paths are formed by a pair of furrow path forming elements, each including a generally U-shaped member having a front leg portion and a rear leg portion, each of the front and rear leg portions including a plurality of openings.
